Separation of Gentamicin Sulfate Separation of Gentamicins  Primesep 200 separates the very hydrophilic gentamicin isomers. Gentamicin contains multiple primary and secondary amines as well as multiple hydroxyl groups. Ion-exchange and other polar interactions provide retention for a compound that elutes in the void of a traditional C8 column. The separation uses a simple mobile phase of water, acetonitrile (MeCN, ACN), and trifluoracetic acid (TFA) with evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD).
