Malathion Analysis on Obelisc and Primesep Mixed-Mode HPLC Column

August 24, 2015

Malathion is the most widely used organophosphate pesticide used in the US. Used heavily in residential landscaping and in public recreation areas, malathion is often used for fruit fly and mosquito eradication. While not considered toxic to humans, malathion metabolizes to a far more toxic malaoxon. The EURL (European Union Reference Laboratory), included malathion as a target pesticide for the EUPT-CF9 a proficiency test for cereals and feedingstuff that require muli-residue methods. Primesep B2 and Obelisc R were used to retain malathion and separate it from impurities. Primesep B2 contains embedded basic ion-pairing groups and Obelisc R contains embedded ionic and hydrophobic groups which can assist in fine tuning separations. Method is LC/MS compatible and can be used as a general approach for analyzing malathion, other organophosphate insecticides, and dozens of other pesticides.

Obelisc R

SIELC has developed the Obelisc™ columns, which are mixed-mode and utilize Liquid Separation Cell technology (LiSC™). These cost-effective columns are the first of their kind to be commercially available and can replace multiple HPLC columns, including reversed-phase (RP), AQ-type reversed-phase, polar-embedded group RP columns, normal-phase, cation-exchange, anion-exchange, ion-exclusion, and HILIC (Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography) columns. By controlling just three orthogonal method parameters - buffer concentration, buffer pH, and organic modifier concentration - users can adjust the column properties with pinpoint precision to separate complex mixtures.

Primesep B2

The Primesep family of mixed-mode columns offers a wide variety of stationary phases, boasting unprecedented selectivity in the separation of a broad array of chemical compounds across multiple applications. Corresponding Primesep guard columns, available with all stationary phases, do not require holders. SIELC provides a method development service available to all customers.
