Melamine is a nitrogen-based organic compound that was first synthesized by the German chemist Justus von Liebig in 1834. Melamine is a decorative coating that is resistant to water and mechanical damage.

Melamine is used for:

  • lamination of particle boards and plywood;
  • manufacture of paints and varnishes;
  • production of decorative paper-laminated plastics and plastics;
  • manufacture of dishes.

We were able to separate Melamine from Acrylamide in HPLC on Primesep 200 column using a mobile phase of water with Formic Acid buffer. This separation can be monitored with UV, ELSD, CAD detection techniques.

Separation of Acrylamide on Newcrom C18 HPLC column

Acrylamide is a colorless, white crystalline solid with no odor. It is highly toxic and is used to make polymers, wrinkle-less fabrics, and paper. Acrylamide can be analyzed by this reverse phase (RP) HPLC method with simple conditions. The mobile phase contains acetonitrile (MeCN), water, and phosphoric acid. For Mass-Spec (MS) compatible applications the phosphoric acid needs to be replaced with formic acid. Smaller 3 µm particle columns are available for fast UPLC applications. This liquid chromatography method is scalable and can be used for isolation of impurities in preparative separation. It also suitable for pharmacokinetics.

Newcrom R1

The Newcrom columns are a family of reverse-phase-based columns. Newcrom A, AH, B, and BH are all mixed-mode columns with either positive or negative ion-pairing groups attached to either short (25 Å) or long (100 Å) ligand chains. Newcrom R1 is a special reverse-phase column with low silanol activity.
